In Memory of Win Jacobs (1937-2020) Members and friends of the Humane Society of Southern NM are very saddened by the passing of Win Jacobs on July 14, 2020 at the age of 83. Win served on the board of directors of the Free Spay Neuter Program for a couple years before the organization evolved into HSSNM where she served several years in varied capacities. Win was a trail blazer in animal welfare work and best practices, recognizing the need for affordable pet care services for animals belonging to families with low or fixed incomes. Win demonstrated through action the possibility of attaining those services and was instrumental in securing offices for three local animal welfare organizations, all sharing the vision of her work. Win was a gifted writer and skilled in administrative work and at laying foundations. This is a big part of her legacy. An obituary for Win appeared in the July 23, 2020 issue of the Las Cruces Sun-News with mention of an outdoor “celebration of life” scheduled for August 9, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. at the Plaza de Las Cruces. An online guest book for condolences is available here. |

HSSNM Yard Sale - May 30, 2020
The Humane Society of Southern NM held a yard sale fundraiser on May 30, 2020. The sale is noteworthy because the fundraiser was the first event HSSNM has held since the stay-at-home quarantine went into effect mid-March. With many restrictions lifted now, HSSNM was able to hold the sale—that's, of course, with social distancing in place as well as wearing of masks.

Critter Connection Session @ Boys & Girls Club – February 25, 2020
Children at the Boys & Girls Club were in for a real treat when Knox, a boxer female, visited the club for a HSSNM “Critter Connection” session on February 25th. Hokie Wiley, Knox’s guardian, demonstrated the amazing skill range Knox has acquired - especially as a very young adult. Knox showed a large repertoire of skills and responses to commands from consistent training: retrieving items, pulling a Kleenex out of a box & delivering to Hokie, pressing light buttons, raising and lowering barking vocalizations, and more. The children were thoroughly entertained and impressed with Knox’s abilities and also learned important pet care information. HUGE thanks to Hokie for bringing sweet, intelligent Knox for Critter Connection!!
